DIY Orchid & Succulent Arrangement

Beautify any space with a succulent arrangement. To complete a look in a space, you need to bring the outside indoors. From an interior design perspective, greenery and plants add a sense of balance and a more natural look. In just a few simple steps, you can create your own custom succulent arrangement that best reflects your style in your home.

PROS:

  • low maintenance
  • drought-friendly (perfect for those who forget to water their plants!)

What you’ll need to buy and how to do it!

STEP 1

You will first need to choose a container that the arrangement will be placed in. When choosing the container, keep in mind the size, color, and style in ratio to the scale of where it will be placed. For example, I chose to have a taller and wider bowl because the scale of my family room is much larger and the arrangement had more space to fill. However for my entry table I chose a shorter oval decorative bowl, because I didn’t want anything restricting the mirror behind the table. Below, I have linked the bowl I chose and along with a few other options with a variety of sizes, styles, and colors that may work best for you and your home.

I chose 16.1″ x 8.2″ Decorative Brass Bowl Gold – Project 62™ from Target to put in my family room, and purchased the 13″ x 7.2″ Oblong Brass Footed Bowl Gold – Threshold™ for my entry table.

STEP 2

The soil you will need should support succulents. I went to my local Home Depot and picked up a bag of Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm, & Citrus Potting Mix. The reason why we chose this particular potting mix is for all its benefits that it provides: grows beautiful plants, builds strong roots, feeds for 6 months use, and is good for indoor and outdoor. I also picked up two of their plant food mist, one for orchids and the other for succulents, which we will use 30 days later to maintain.

STEP 3

When picking out your orchids/succulents/plants, it’s nice to have a variety. You can pick some that are tall, short, long that may even drape off the container and so on. I personally love the look of my succulents and orchid roots folding over the container. This adds a much more natural look to the arrangement. Picking a variety of heights also gives the illusion of a fuller, more wild arrangement. All of these assortments can give more depth and bring instant elegance to any room with its eye-popping, vibrant colors.

Once I went to my local nursery, I decided to pick out each individual succulent. However, there are pre-made assortment packages available in locations such as Home Depot. I knew I wanted white, mini orchids and Phalaenopsis orchids in my arrangement. A tip I learned from my mom (who was a florist for over 20 years) was to drive down to my local Trader Joe’s because their orchid prices (only $12) are unbeatable!

STEP 4

Putting everything together! I bought a coconut liner that will help with water absorption, my decorative Bowl is 16inches wide therefore the lining I chose was also 16 inches. Then I put an even amount of soil to level out the round container, so the plants won’t sink or overflow. Next is my favorite part! This is when you get to be creative and design your own custom arrangement. I played around with the order of the succulents for a few minutes before pressing down gently and continuing to add soil throughout all the gaps. Last, but definitely not least, add the moss and try to hide all the dirt with the different types of moss. The moss makes a huge difference in making the overall appearance look much more alive, vivid, & green. It can take the arrangement from a 4 to 10, in my opinion.

TIP: Orchids may stay in their plastic nursery containers to help maintain their roots and specific soil type.
